When you think of Greece or the Greek islands, it’s hard not to dream of azure blue waters and glistening golden beaches. But before you go ahead and book your summer vacation and Greek villa, it’s worth keeping in mind some of the cultural sights to visit.

With over 100 archaeological museums and some of the greatest ruins and tourist attractions in the world, Greece is also a destination for culture enthusiasts, historians and of course, foodies.

With more to discover than islands, mountains and secluded beaches, here’s what else you should be adding to your itinerary.

The foodies island, it’s easy to eat your way around Crete, home to some of the best vineyards and wine-making in the country.

Sleepy fishing villages are great to wonder around and soak up the local history, as well as sample the local grilled octopus and deep fried bakaliaros. Head to Elounda near the capital, for sunsets and mezes, often within stumbling distance of some of the best Cretan luxury villas, which is rather handy!

Olive oil is known as ‘liquid gold’ here, so be sure to visit one of the many olive-oil farms. Paraschakis is known to be one of the best on its lingering coast.

This hedonistic island ticks all the right boxes. Amongst the boutique abodes and luxury Mykonos villa rentals, there’s also glorious beaches, a bustling nightlight and plenty of history to uncover. Which is why no trip would be complete without a visit to the island of Delos nearby.

This small sleepy island is accessible only by boat from the islands, and must be done in a day since there’s no accommodation on site. Upon arrival, you’ll be wowed by this exceptional archaeological site with a fascinating history. A former sanctuary to the gods Apollo and Artemis, there is so much to see and marvel at, whether you’re into Greek history or not.

Zante is the more unassuming of the Greek islands, known for its dramatic beaches and clifftop views. It’s also home to a former ‘Venetian Castle’. These ruins were restored in 1515, and take you back in time, with its old prison, sewage system and gun powder rooms still intact for all to view.

After refreshing in your Zante villa, be sure to head to Keri village to enjoy the best sunset views on the island.

On the mainland, the well-connected port of Thessaloniki is a gateway to the glorious coastlines and luxury Greek villas you see in glossy magazines. With great roads connecting the Peloponnese, it’s perfect for road trips, stopping by local tavernas for a well-earned dish along the way. As you drive along, you’ll go past iconic monasteries and fishing villages that serve to remind you of its proud past.

Back in Thessaloniki city, you’ll find many nods to Alexander the Great – including a formidable statue, along with a historic Watch Tower – unmissable sights during a walk down its promenade by night.
